South Africa, the southernmost country on the African continent, has a population of 54.5 million people and a life expectancy at birth of 59 years (male) and 66 years (female). Since 2012, South Africa has been in the process of significantly reorganizing its health system to implement a National Health Insurance fund as well as develop and roll out National Core Standards to benchmark and regulate quality of care by Provincial Health Authorities. The EU-Luxembourg-WHO UHC Partnership, which South Africa joined in January 2016, is providing expertise and facilitating policy dialogue to support this transition.
